It took me a long time to figure out how to do that. Part of the reason I’ve gotten to that point—a big part of it—is by making mistakes. That’s the key. Mistakes are how we learn. If you get something perfect on your first try, you’re not going to have room to grow. Or to put it another way, as Leonard Cohen said, “There’s a crack in everything, and that’s how the light gets in.” In fact, one of my favorite ideas is that perfection is the enemy of good. To me, that means that if we wait until everything is just right, we’ll never accomplish anything.
If I were to look back and give myself
some advice about working in government, I’d say: take responsibility. I’ve written about this before, and it’s based on advice I’ve followed for instagram data over 30 years. Be true to yourself and have your own voice. This means you have to be brave enough to be yourself, no matter what your flaws are. Knowing when to ask for help is a sign of strength, not weakness.
The right fit is everything
You can always find a job that pays better, is more secure, or is more appealing. If the workplace is toxic, you’ll end up hating it.
